Industrial Additive Manufacturing
3D Printed Gears
RapidPrintParts produces functional 3D printed gears as mechanical components for industrial applications. These parts suit equipment where traditional manufacturing is slow or uneconomical, such as custom machinery, automation systems, and replacement components.
Suitable Processes and Materials
Gears are evaluated against operating requirements including material, load, temperature, tolerance, and quantity. In-house processes include:
FDM / FFF
For larger structures and equipment parts using materials such as ABS, ASA, PC, PA, PA-CF, PETG, TPU, and PEEK.
SLA
For high-detail prototypes using engineering resins.
SLS & MJF
For complex durable nylon parts using PA12, PA11, PA12 GF, and TPU.
Build envelopes and typical tolerances vary by process. Guaranteed tolerance requires engineering review.
Practical Selection Factors
Selection begins with application details. Key inputs include load, temperature, and chemical exposure; critical dimensions and surface finish needs; quantity and repeat demand; and target lead time.
Post-Processing Options
Post-processing options may include blasting, sanding, inserts, tapping, and CNC secondary machining when required for the project.
- Blasting
- Sanding
- Inserts
- Tapping
- CNC secondary machining
Design Inputs and Limitations
Gears must be reviewed for functional performance. Factors such as tooth geometry, backlash, and wear resistance depend on the chosen material and process.
FDM and MJF
Typical tolerance references are ±0.2 mm or ±0.3%.
SLS
Typical tolerance references are ±0.3 mm or ±0.3%.
SLA
Offers tighter references around ±0.1 mm.
All guaranteed tolerances require engineering review.
Common Industrial Applications
These parts align with best-fit uses such as mechanical components in machinery, automation OEM equipment, robotics integrators, and MRO spare parts. They support low-volume end-use needs and bridge production before tooling.
Machinery
Mechanical components in custom machinery.
Automation OEM
Components for automation equipment.
Robotics Integrators
Functional parts for robotics builds.
MRO Spare Parts
Replacement components and bridge production.
Engineering Review
Provide the part application, material requirements, load and environment details, quantity, critical dimensions, and STEP/STP files plus any 2D drawings. An engineering review confirms suitability before production.
